Yet most organisations remain unequipped to recognise the impact of trauma, let alone respond to it with skill and compassion. The result? Misunderstood behaviours, missed opportunities, and environments that unintentionally perpetuate harm.

Trauma is more common than we think. More than half of us experience at least one traumatic experience in our lifetime. About one third of people go on to develop post-traumatic symptoms like hypervigilance, heightened emotional reactivity, depression, or a sense of detachment. Women and minority groups are affected more than others.

Trauma can have a powerful - and often invisible to the untrained eye - impact on our self beliefs, emotional and behavioural patterns, attention, cognition, sensory processing, levels of energy, quality of sleep, and more. Trauma informed practice has the potential to remove many workplace physical and mental health issues, performance blockers, and causes of team dysfunction that do not respond to more established interventions.

Trauma can disguise as perfectionism, overachievement, withdrawal, overwork, conflict, or chronic stress. Without awareness, these patterns in the workplace are often misjudged, pathologized, and mismanaged by everyone involved.

The Time for Self-Led Transformation
Trauma-informed workplaces are essential, but they’re only part of the equation.
If you’re someone who’s lived through adversity, you probably already know how frustrating and limiting it is to wait for others to understand, accommodate, or change. It may not be fair, but often workplaces lack the insights, skills, and priorities required to address the complex layers of individual and collective trauma their employees carry.
